Know the Warning Signs
Do your wisdom teeth need to be removed? Signs to watch for.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA), third molars—commonly known as wisdom teeth—are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. Because modern human jaws are often too small to accommodate these extra teeth, wisdom teeth frequently become "impacted" (trapped beneath the gums or bone) or grow in at incorrect angles. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe pain, swelling, infection, decay in neighboring teeth, and even cysts that can damage the jawbone.
Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
Signs that your wisdom teeth may need to be removed.
You should schedule an evaluation with Dr. Ahmad Najjar if you or your child experiences any of the following symptoms in the back of the mouth:
- Active Pain or Throbbing: Persistent pain or pressure in the back of the jaw, which can radiate to your ear or neck.
- Swollen or Bleeding Gums: Red, tender, or swollen gums around the partially erupted wisdom tooth, which can make chewing painful.
- Jaw Stiffness or Difficulty Opening: Muscle spasms in the jaw that make it difficult to open your mouth fully (lockjaw).
- Sinus Pressure or Pain: Wisdom teeth growing in the upper jaw can press against the sinuses, leading to congestion, pressure, and headaches.
- Crowding or Shifting Teeth: Pressure from wisdom teeth applies force to the adjacent molars, causing your front teeth to shift or overlap.
- Chronic Bad Breath or Unpleasant Taste: Partially erupted wisdom teeth are incredibly difficult to clean, trapping food and bacteria and leading to localized gum infections (pericoronitis).
Wisdom Teeth Care Under One Roof
In-house wisdom teeth extractions: Simple, surgical & emergency.
At NuWave Dental & Orthodontics, we handle all types of wisdom teeth extractions in-house, providing a safe, comfortable, and seamless surgical experience.
Simple Wisdom Teeth Extractions
When a wisdom tooth has fully erupted through the gums and is growing in straight, but cannot be kept clean or is causing crowding, we perform a simple extraction.
- Clinical Definition: The tooth is visible above the gumline and can be removed using local anesthetic and specialized dental instruments without surgical incisions.
- How It Is Performed: Dr. Ahmad Najjar gently loosens the tooth and removes it. The procedure is quick, typically taking only 15 to 30 minutes, and requires minimal recovery time.
Surgical & Impacted Wisdom Teeth Extractions
When a wisdom tooth is trapped beneath the gumline or jawbone, growing sideways, or only partially erupted, it is classified as impacted and requires surgical extraction.
- Clinical Definition: A surgical procedure requiring a small incision in the gum tissue to access and safely remove the tooth, sometimes requiring the removal of a small amount of bone or dividing the tooth into sections for a safer extraction.
- Why It Matters: Leaving an impacted wisdom tooth untreated can lead to fluid-filled cysts, which can destroy the jawbone and permanently damage the surrounding nerves and healthy adjacent teeth.
- Surgical Lead: Dr. Ahmad Najjar's advanced residency training at Columbia University makes him uniquely qualified to perform complex, deep bony impaction surgeries in-house, eliminating the need to refer patients to an outside oral surgeon.
Emergency Wisdom Teeth Extractions
If you are experiencing severe, unbearable pain, swelling that affects your cheek or eye, or a high fever, you may have an acute wisdom tooth infection that requires emergency extraction.
- Clinical Definition: An immediate, same-day surgical intervention to remove the infected tooth, drain any localized infection, and prevent the spread of bacteria to other parts of the body.
- How We Help: We understand how disruptive dental pain can be. Our team is committed to accepting emergency patients immediately, providing rapid pain relief, and performing same-day extractions whenever possible.

What to expect:
Your wisdom teeth removal process at Nuwave
Step-by-Step: From Consultation to Recovery
We are committed to making your surgical experience as predictable, safe, and comfortable as possible. Here is what you can expect during your wisdom teeth extraction journey:
Surgical Consultation & 3D Imaging
We begin with a comprehensive oral exam and utilize our on-site 3D Cone Beam CT Scanner. This advanced imaging device allows Dr. Ahmad Najjar to visualize the exact position of your wisdom teeth, their root structures, and their proximity to the main nerve of the lower jawbone, ensuring a highly precise and safe surgical plan.
Anesthesia & Sedation Administration
On the day of your surgery, we administer your chosen sedation option to ensure you are completely relaxed and free of pain. Local anesthetic is also applied to completely numb the surgical sites.
The Extraction Procedure
Dr. Ahmad Najjar performs the extraction with meticulous precision. If the tooth is impacted, he makes a small incision, removes the tooth, and places dissolvable sutures to promote rapid healing.
Immediate Post-Operative Care
You will rest in our comfortable recovery room until your sedation wears off. We provide you and your driver with a detailed post-operative care kit, including sterile gauze, ice packs, and clear instructions.
Comfortable Recovery at Home
Most patients recover fully within 3 to 5 days. Dr. Najjar will prescribe pain management options and antibiotics if necessary to ensure a smooth, comfortable healing process.
Sedation Dentistry:
Pain-Free Oral Surgery
Your physical and emotional comfort is our top priority. Because dental anxiety is incredibly common, especially regarding oral surgery, NuWave Dental & Orthodontics offers various in-house sedation options:
Oral Sedation
A prescription pill taken shortly before your appointment that induces a state of deep relaxation. You will remain conscious but may feel drowsy and have little memory of the procedure.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
A deep sedative administered directly into the bloodstream, causing you to drift into a dream-like state. You will be completely unaware of the procedure and will require a driver to take you home.A deep sedative administered directly into the bloodstream, causing you to drift into a dream-like state. Your Wisdom Teeth Questions, Answered
Frequently asked questions:
Wisdom teeth removal in Darien.
At What Age Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
The ideal age to remove wisdom teeth is between 17 and 21 years old. During this period, the roots of the wisdom teeth are not yet fully formed, and the surrounding jawbone is less dense, making the extraction significantly easier and reducing the risk of surgical complications. Healing is also much faster in teenagers and young adults. However, wisdom teeth can be safely removed at any age if they are causing pain or dental issues.
How Long Is the Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Most patients recover fully within 3 to 5 days. During the first 24 to 48 hours, you should rest, apply ice packs to your cheeks to minimize swelling, and eat only soft foods. Most patients can return to school or light office work within 2 to 3 days, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least one week to prevent dislodging the blood clot (dry socket).
What Is a “Dry Socket” and How Can I Prevent It?
A dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is a painful complication that occurs when the protective blood clot that forms in the extraction socket is dislodged or dissolves prematurely, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. You can prevent dry socket by avoiding sucking through a straw, spitting forcefully, smoking, or brushing vigorously near the surgical sites for at least 7 days after surgery.
Will I Be Fully Asleep During My Wisdom Teeth Extraction?
If you choose IV sedation, you will enter a state of deep relaxation where you are technically asleep but still able to respond to basic commands. Most patients have absolutely no memory of the procedure and feel as though they slept through it. If you prefer to be fully unconscious, we can discuss general anesthesia options, but IV sedation is highly effective and preferred for the vast majority of patients.
Can I Have All Four Wisdom Teeth Removed at the Same Time?
Yes, it is highly recommended to remove all four wisdom teeth during a single appointment, especially if you are utilizing IV sedation. This allows you to undergo sedation only once, experience a single recovery period, and avoid having to schedule multiple surgical appointments.
Do You Perform Wisdom Teeth Extractions In-House or Refer Patients Out?
Unlike many general dental practices in Darien and Willowbrook that refer patients to an outside oral surgeon, we perform all wisdom teeth extractions—including complex, deeply impacted cases—completely in-house. Dr. Ahmad Najjar's extensive surgical residency training at Columbia University allows him to perform these procedures safely and comfortably in our own office, saving you time and money.
What Can I Eat After My Wisdom Teeth Are Removed?
For the first 24 to 48 hours, you should stick to a strictly liquid and soft-food diet. Excellent options include applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smooth soups (not hot), pudding, smoothies (e.g., banana, but do not use a straw), and ice cream. Avoid hot liquids, spicy foods, crunchy foods (like chips or popcorn), and foods with small seeds that can get trapped in the extraction sites.
How Do I Know if My Wisdom Teeth Are Infected?
Signs of an active wisdom tooth infection include severe throbbing pain in the back of the mouth, swelling in your gums, cheek, or jaw, difficulty swallowing or opening your mouth, a foul taste in your mouth, chronic bad breath, and a fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact NuWave Dental & Orthodontics immediately at (630) 541-6986 for an emergency evaluation.
